[slicer-devel] More frequent release of stable versions needed

Hi all,

It’s unavoidable to make mistakes during development, so it’s normal that nightly builds sometimes break in different ways. However, many users are forced to use nightly builds because we release stable builds so rarely. I think that MITK’s schedule of releasing a stable version in every 3 months would be a reasonable choice. Users would get access to features in a timely manner and it should not be too much overhead for developers.

I guess we release new stable versions so rarely because it means too much work for developers, but probably we should just change our processes to make releasing a new version easier.

What are those tasks that require the most effort when creating a new stable release? Could those be simplified?
Would it be feasible to switch to a a quarterly stable release schedule?

Andras
