[slicer-users] How does 3d slicer interpret a pixel to be black when loading a dicom volume?

Hello,

I have an ADNI brain image in dcm format whose black bg value is around
16000 and ventricles are around 17000.
When I save the dcm file as a nrrd file, the pixel type is unsigned short in
the header.

Our group has scanned a phantom whose black bg value is around 3 when loaded
as a dcm in 3D Slicer.

How does 3D slicer know that 16000 is black in the brain image, and 3 is
also black in the phantom?

Is there always a fixed range of pixel values, is the absolute max to min
difference the same when 3D Slicer interprets the black?

My same question would be regarding white pixels.

Thanks,
John
